About This Item

Paris: Claude Barbin, 1670. Fine. Claude Barbin, Paris 1670, petit in-8 (9x15,5cm), (16 p.) 80 pp., relié. (Néron, Acte IV, sc. 3) [ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Claude Barbin | Paris 1670 | 9 x 15,5 cm | bound in morocco Rare first edition with ornamental headpieces, letterheads and culs-de-lampe. Later binding in full red morocco, Jansenist spine, gilt date at foot, marbled endpapers, elaborate gilt floral turn-ins, all edges gilt. A very beautiful copy of one of the most famous plays in the French repertoire. Britannicus was played for the first time on 13 December 1669 at the Hôtel de Bourgogne and received mixed reactions. This edition is prefaced by Racine in response to his critics: ""Of all the works that I have given to the public, there is none that attracted more applause nor more critics that this one. [...] What is missed by the spectators may be noticed by the readers."" (I embrace my rival, but only to strangle him) Nero, Act IV, scene 3
