New York: National Temperance Society and Publication House, 1884. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good+. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Hardcover. Original brick colored cloth decorated in gilt and black. No publication date listed (1884). Originally published by the National Temperance Society and Publication House and then subsequently printed by the Right Worthy Grand Lodge, Independent Order Good Templars with the first mention in Godly's Lady Book and Magazine, July 1884, page 101 Acknowledgments section. Book exterior shows soiling and spotting, corners are softened. No hinge cracks noted. Title page has small flaw in paper above the word temperance and the title, but appears like a closed tear but does not show on the other side of the page. Foxing also noted and pages are toned. Original owner's name and information written on front pastedown. The original owner and signature belongs to Lavinia Hauke Engle - who was the mother of Lavinia Margaret Engle, an American suffragette and politician. Lavinia Hauke Engle was the first president of the Montgomery League of Women Voters and even testified before congress for women's suffrage with Susan B. Anthony. Book condition graded as good plus.
