New York: G.P. Putnam, 1856. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. xi, 428 pp + publisher's ads, with two lithographed plates before the title page, showing Rio de Janiero and Catete, Original red cloth binding, with chipping to cloth at base of spine, light wear to edges. Internally sound and clean. Reverend Charles Samuel Stewart (1795-1870) served as missionary in to the Sandwich Islands from 1823 to 1825. In 1828, he became a Chaplain in the U.S. Navy. He served in various places, including: on the U.S.S. Brandywine from 1841 to 1842, a hospital in New York from 1847 to 1848, on the U.S.S. Congress from 1851 to 1853, and on the steam frigate Niagara from 1861 to 1862. This book recounts his time on the Congress, which was assigned to the Brazil Squadron with the mission of protecting United States interests from the Amazon to Cape Horn. Borba de Moraes p. 288.
