SUMMARY - INTRODUCTION by Admiral Chester W. Ninitz and (from back cover) - On 3 May 1945, during the bitter battle for Okinawa, 25 kamikaze planes attacked the ships on radar dury off the island. In a fiece 60-minute battle two ships were sunk and the USS Aaron Ward was set on fire from bow to stern by the 10 kamikazi plans that slammed into her, 80 men were killed and more than 150 men were wounded. All 25 kamikaze planes either crashed or were shot down. This is the incredible but absolutely true account of the bavery and heroism of the men and the ships of the United States Navy.
