About This Item

UK,8vo wraps,s/back,1st edn. [The Bradford World War 1 Group actively researches all matters relating to the Great War of 1914-18.The group is based at the Mechanics' Institute Library in Bredford and its members have jointly written this book.] FINE. No owner inscrptn and no price removal from card cover.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,matt montage'd,monochrome photographic illustrated front cover with capitalised,brown-lettered title and capitalised white-lettered authors' names to lower edge and capitalised black-lettered WW1 Group credit at top edge; a black spine/backstrip with no reading creases and with capitalised red+white lettered title,capitalised,white-lettered Bradford WORLD WAR 1 Group, and publisher's capitalised b/w lettered+ illustrated colophon tofoot of same, rear cover with Bradford Cenotaph unveiling's sepia photograph and black-lettered synopsis.Negligible shelf-wear,bumping, creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present - but front lower corner with a diagonal corner crease - otherwise a superb example.Top+fore-edges bright crisp and clean without blemish; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - appears unread other than my own collation.UK,8vo wraps,s/back,1st edn,viii-xviiipp [paginated] includes reverse of Preface and an Introduction both by Mike Woods,12 chapters, profuse b/w contemporary b/w photographs, b/w facsimile illustration reproductions interspersed throughout the text and the book,Appendices (3),and a Bibliography and Further reading; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a Contents list/table with Acknowledgements to its reverse and first page of the Preface. Visually the exterior appearance is still exceptional, and particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its its 15+ year-old-age and nature, i.e. a wraps/softback edn. It is only the minor exterior fault described that prevents a slightly higher grading. Despite that,it really is still an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of detracting faults. The men and women of Bradford, along with their cousins in other British towns and cities, made a distinguished contribution to the First World War.The many memorials around the city bear witness to the numerous losses suffered but by weaving together many personal accounts, this book tells the full story of Bradford at war - not just the experience of the trenches but also the impact the war had at home: the manufacture of khaki cloth, aircraft and machine tools, the story of one of Britain's foremost war hospitals, the experiences of one of Bradford's most famous sons,J. B. Priestley (some of his letters home are published here for the first time),the massive munitions explosion, the emergence of women in the workforce and as crusaders for peace and,of course, everyday life on the home front. Amply illustrated and impeccably researched, this book will appeal to anyone who is interested in the response of this great city to the Great War. Please contact seller, [because of the lighter weight of this item,] for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! N.B.
