"This is not a book of 'names', though such people as Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas pass across the scene. Compulsively readably (few will put it down unless they must), it is an amazing picture of a prophet surrounded by his adorers. The whole set-up is vividly evoked - the great man's emigre Russian family and friends, the students, the disciples who come and go, the weekend visitors, the bevy of children (of whom Fritz is one). There's a great deal of petty rivalry and squabbling, and Gurdjieff is always there to mete out eccentric punishment or reward. Sometimes he isn't there - he goes to Paris, he goes to take the waters at Vichy - and then the community embarks on worse squabbling which he has to sort out when he comes back." - from dust-jacket blurb. .
