About This Item

Boston : Thomas Groom; Mussey; Damrell & Moore and George Coolidge; etc, 1840. Hardcover. Good. An attractive group of mid-19th century Boston Almanacs, in original bindings. 14 volumes. Includes the years: 1840; 1841; 1842; 1843 (3 copies in variant bindings); 1844; 1845; 1846; 1847; 1848 (2 volumes in variant bindings); 1852; 1854. Attractive covers. Most of the bindings are sound, but two are shaken. Includes more than 10 maps of Boston and the surrounding area, most fold out or double page (a few of the volumes are lacking the front map). Engraved illustrations on important buildings, maps, etc. Interesting contemporary advertisements, especially for printers. Some of the volumes include original diary entries / memoranda in a neat hand. Early signature of Jesse Smith of Salem, Mass.; Joseph Waters, 1840; William Sutton; Mr. & Mrs. J. Robinson (inlaid period calling card); May. G. Baer; Maria L. Cleaver, etc. Dickinson started the Boston Almanac in 1836. It contained a chronology of major events and served as a business directory.
