The text is illustrated with black-and-white photographs, reproductions of documents and at the beginning of the text a colour illustration of a drover having an altercation with a lizard (on horseback). This is the story of Clarence (Clarrie) Pankhurst, who, as a malnourished 12 year old with an older brother left their home to relieve their mother from some of her burden, and to make their own way in the world. Clarrie became a "Boss Drover" whereby he and his team would take cattle from one place to a designated and place in a certain period of time. It was a time of immense responsibility, while dealing with the unremitting and unforgiving outback. Minor rubbing of the book corners with softening and rubbing of the back strip.
