About This Item

The original Borstal, Rochester Prison celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2024.

First built to house the convicts building a line of defensive forts in Medway, it went on to become the flagship reform prison to train young men in order to keep them away from a life of crime, a system which went on to be used in prisons across the country and around the world. Today, the staff still work tirelessly to turn around the lives of the men in their custody.

This book looks into the history of a prison which has seen different roles as a convict prison, a juvenile-adult institution, and even as an immigration detention centre.
