About This Item

London: Gurney and Jackson, 1924. First edition. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6.5". Abel Chapman; W. H. Riddell. A first edition of Abel Chapman's heavily illustrated volume on nature at the Scottish borders and beyond. A first edition of Abel Chapman's work of natural history on the Scottish borders and beyond. With 170 sketches, including nineteen colour illustrations by William Hutton Riddell on sixteen plates, and twenty one monochrome plates by Chapman himself, collated and complete. With a focus on birds and fish, Chapman shares his observations of the animals, flora, and fauna that live in these inhospitable areas. The Sunderland-born naturalist and hunter contributed towards saving the Spanish Ibex from extinction, and helped establish the first game reserve in South Africa. Prior owner's pencil inscription the recto of the front free endpaper, 'D. R. Guard'. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to the joints and the spine. There is a tear in the cloth that extends half way down the spine, but the spine has been adhered. The front hinge is starting, and is a little tender. Internally, generally firmly bound, with a few points of strain across the text. Pages are bright with light scattered foxing throughout. Good
