About This Item

Chicago: My Bookhouse for Children. Very Good with No dust jacket as issued. c. 1926. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. This original (c.1926) group of sales materials for a "Bookhouse Lady" includes two spiral-bound examples of Bookhouse volumes (several 8vo. sample pages from Bookhouse volumes and several sample 4to. pages from the Travelship international series volumes) bound into one red leather volume with 22 pages of printed advice, sales strategies and tricks, and directions loosely inserted. These includes such topics as Plan Your Day's Work; Help in Selling a Mother of a Young Baby; Points for the Older Child; To Help Meet Excuse - Child is Too Destructive; Consult Husband - Series of Talking Points; The "Can't Afford" Excuse; etc. The Book House for children was founded in 1919 by Winnetka, Illinois resident Olive Beaupre Miller (1883-1968), an American author, publisher, and editor of children's literature. She began by printing children's literature that Mrs. Miller personally edited to meet her own high standards. The individual books were sold door-to-door by a completely female sales force known as the "Bookhouse Ladies." The Book House for Children was remarkable for its large female staff, at a time when most women did not work outside of the home. "The utilization of women in all phases of its business activity was one of the unique aspects of The Book House for Children. Not only was there an all-woman sales force but the majority of the employees were women." (Taylor: Olive Beaupre Miller and The Book House for Children).. Extremely scarce.. The Bookhouse for Children Series. Color Illustrations. 4to 11" - 13" tall. Unpaginated pp .
