New York: Henry S. Goodspeed & Co., 1873. with an Introduction by Dr. L.P. Brockett 8vo size decorative cloth; 1,158 pages. Every page has a beautifully decorated engraved border: angels, cherubim, seraphim at the top and an open bible centered among flourishes at the bottom. There are also several hundred full page black and white engraved illustrations. Dark brown endpapers. Covers are brown cloth with bevelled edges. They are decorated with gilt titles and illustrations and black decorations. Ingram Cobbin (1777 - 1851) was an English minister. When ill heath forced his retirement from the pulpit, he turned to writing hymns and biblical and scholastic works. Book is partly disbound with front cover detached bound to front endpaper and back cover partly detached. Worn corners and head and heel of spine and to detached areas. The same name in pencil on the title page verso and back fixed endpaper. Early American Imprints, ser. 2 (Shoemaker), 4700; First Century of German Language Printing in the U.S.A, 2516. Scarce. In Good Condition: leather is rubbed with minor loss at head of spine; back board is scraped; lacking clasp; lacking both free endpapers, and 1 leaf (pp. 221-222); p. 235 scraped, with small loss of text; faint dampstains throughout; otherwise, clean and tight.

Publisher's dark brown cloth with gilt-stamped cover title and decoration. No date of publication. Little is known about the publisher Maler Renz, but it was active in the mid-19th century. This title is not in WorldCat. The title page verso contains a poem by German poet Albert Knapp (1798-1864). Very scarce. In Fair Condition: cover is rubbed and slightly soiled; lacking number 9 and 2/3 of number 10; numbers 30 and 32 are detached but present, with chipping along fore-edges; number 34 lacking lower corner, without loss of illustration or caption; numerous closed tears; finger soiling throughout.

First published in England during the latter part of the 18th century under the title "An Abridgment Of The Holy Scriptures," it was widely disseminated in both Britain and on the Continent, and by 1814 had undergone 15 editions. Authored by William Sellon (1730-1790), revered curate of St. James, Clerkenwell from 1767 until his death, who was much esteemed for his personal integrity and power as a lecturer. Volume bound in brown leather with raised bands on the spine, stamped in blind front and back, metal clasp, and metal Star of David (enameled in blue and green and with the letters "IHS" in the center in gold), inner dentelles in gilt. All edges gilt over red, coated brown endpapers. The covers are lightly rubbed, and there is an owner name on the front blank page. Although the book has been well used, it is not badly worn.
