INSCRIBED & EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with FINISHED ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR HUMOROUS IMAGES of TWO INDIANS & their scratching DOG in FULL COLOR painted on a front endpaper, quarto / 4to (11" x 8 5/8"), blue cloth with black lettering on spine and front cover with Thunderbird, illustrated throughout with reproductions of the beautiful frontispiece and 5 comparable full-page colored plates as well as sepia vignettes delineated in text and the page borders depicting Indian images, artifacts, and lore executed by Holling C. and Lucille Holling, brown map endpapers, 125 pages. Weight: 1 lb. 10 oz. Holling Clancy Holling (1900 - 1973) was a brilliantly talented American author-and-illustrator. In addition to his warmly executed naturalistic full-color plates, he and his wife filled the margins of their books with detailed vignettes of entrancing images, objects, and lore to accompany their finely written and remarkably interesting narratives. <br/><br/>Holling is well known for the book Paddle-to-the-Sea, which was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1942. Other distinguished works include his beautifully illustrated and written Seabird (1948) and Minn of the Mississippi (1951), which both won Newbery Honors. Holling wrote and illustrated--often with his brilliantly talented wife Lucille--a score of other highly prized young-people's books.<br/><br/>Lucille Webster Holling (1900 - 1989) was an illustrator, advertising and commercial Artist, fashion designer and set Designer, as well as a teacher . She (and her husband, m.1925) met while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. She is best known for her collaborations with Holling on The Book of Indians (1935), The Book of Cowboys (1936), Little Buffalo Boy (1939), and Pagoo (1957).<br/><br/>UNIQUE EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED PRESENTATION COPY! The only one we've seen with such FINE ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS: detailed, humorous, and large! Cloth is tight but with moderate soil and considerable wear to edges and corners. Pages are clean and bright without extraneous marks or scribbles. Very light and uniform toning to pages. Small chip lost to upper right corner of watercolor illustration. No foxing. No dust jacket.
