London: Saunders and Otley, 1836-7. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 9" by 5.5". None. Two finely bound poetry anthologies. Illustrated, with 106 listed engraved title heading vignettes across both volumes as well as a vignette title page to each. An additional two plates to each volume of facsimile signatures of the British poets and authors. To the preface the editor notes that the facsimile plates are 'copied from authentic documents' Edited by Samuel Carter Hall, an Irish-born Victorian journalist best known for his editorship of The Art Journal . These are two comprehensive poetry anthologies of works by many eminent British poets such as Swift, Addison, Cowper, Johnson, Burns, Pope and Lyttleton. In a morocco binding rebacked with calf spines featuring five raised bands with gilt stamped detailing. Externally, excellent with very minor shelfwear to the extremities. Prior owner's inscription to front endpaper, D M Carte. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with scattered spots throughout. Some minor damp staining to margins of final few pages to volume I. Very Good Indeed
