Illustrator: The Author. 6.7 kg; in two volumes, volume I -- XVI, + fold out chart (in perfect condition,) 428 pp., with 50 tipped in plates in colour drawn by the author, (plates XXII detached but still present. All other plates accounted for and in good condition. Volume II -- published 1911 XII, 420 pages, includes bibliography, glossary of terms, index, and plates LI -- XCIX. Both volumes also contain innumerable black-and-white line drawings. All plates are present. On page 213 there is a label for a chilblain liniment that has become stuck to the left-hand margin, otherwise, the interior of both volumes is free of major blemish. Volume I has a 1.0 inch tear in the cloth central to the top edge of the spine, the rear panel of volume II and the front panel of volume I have suffered mirror damp staining/fading, and the rear panel of volume I is severely affected by water/damp damage. Nevertheless the board remains sound. This is a book for the antique dealer who wants to learn about the furniture that was available pre-world War II, and Howard developed, how was made, the timbers used, the reasons for changes in styles and fashions etc etc many of the pieces illustrated no longer exist in the open market, yet this book will enable the dedicated person to recognise the truly valuable antique from the modern reproduction.
