The original edition of the Book of Concord was published in 1580 as an attempt to settle differences that had arisen in the interpretation of the Augsburg Confession of 1530. Contents: preface to the book of concord; the three chief symbols or creeds; the Augsburg confession (1530); apology of the Augsburg confession (1531); the Smalcald articles (1537); treatise on the power and primacy of the Pope (1537); the small catechism (1529); the large catechism (1529); formula of concord (1577). Synopsis
The Book of Concord or Concordia (1580) is the historic doctrinal standard of the Lutheran Church, consisting of ten credal documents recognized as authoritative in Lutheranism since the 16th century. They are also known as the symbolical books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Book of Concord was published in German on June 25, 1580 in Dresden, the fiftieth anniversary of the presentation of the Augsburg Confession to Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg.
