Dod in Ave-Mary Lane, London' (Cambridge, England), 3 1/2 x 5 7/8 inches tall x 1 3/8 inches thick full leather bound, a dark olive morocco binding, ornate gilt border and decoration to boards and edges, five raised bands and gilt decoration to spine, all page edges gilt, marbled endpapers, 48 full-page engravings (including one extra engraved title page), two letterpress title pages (the Book of Psalms with its own t.p.), unpaginated (but approximately 373 pp. of text, exclusive of engravings). Price shown at base of title page: 'Nine Pence unbound.' Covers rubbed, mildly soiled and edgeworn, especially along spine and tips. Gilt to page edges dulled, with minor soiling to fore page edges. Armorial bookplate of RHL-C de Beaumont to front pastedown. One of the 48 engravings (lost sheep parable, Luke 15:5) colored in green. De minimis chipping to upper tips of a few leaves. Otherwise, a very good copy of this scarce and handsome edition of the Book of Common Prayer. ESTC (No. T222570) only locates copies at Oxford University, Boston Parish Library in Lincolnshire and at Washington State University Library. Handsome unsigned plates depict New Testament characters and stories, and such Anglican events as the Gunpowder Plot and the Restoration of King Charles II. ~UUU~ The Book of Common Prayer is the short title of a number of related prayer books used in the Anglican Communion, first published in 1549 in the reign of Edward VI, a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. This version substantially reflects the 1662 revision carried out after the tumultuous events leading to and including the English Civil War. . Good. 1760.
