About This Item

Oxford: : Printed by the University-Printers., 1701 Text printed in double columns. A-Z2,2A, Z3-Z6, 2A4 (1728), Z8-2B1, 2 leaves no signatures (Restauration of Royal Family, 1692), 2B-2B4 (final leaf). The special services and a few other leaves have been inserted from other editions. Copper engraved fontispiece portrait of Queen Anne (unsigned, very early regal portrait without crown, necklace or sceptre, but with Royal coat of arms- Anne was not crowned until 23rd April 1702 -1701 is the publication date of this book, the year before- and only reigned for five years, 55 days). 42 copper engraved plates. Owner's signature on front free endpaper (Edward Chippendall. 19th Regiment. 1st July 1853). Some occasional spotting, and creased corners (particularly in the first gathering-binder's error) with a very few marginal tears, contemporary ink scribblings and small ink stains. 12 x 19.5 cm. Contemporary black goatskin, spine with slightly raised bands and double fillet gilt rules (split with 1 x 5 cm piece missing, rubbed and with slightly worn and bumped corners). Boards with scrolling blind stamped edges (rather worn and patinated). The original book was published in 1549. It was a product of the English Reformation. Like her distant cousin, Elizabeth, Anne survived religious tumult. Though her father, mother, and stepmother were all Catholics, Anne was raised in the Church of England at the behest of her uncle, King Charles II. When her father, James II, lost the throne in the so-called Glorious Revolution of 1688 because of his Catholic leanings, Anne had only to wait her turn to succeed her sister and brother-in-law, the Protestant Mary and William. After Anne's reign, the Church of England was firmly established. Provenance:Lieutenant-General Edward Chippindall (1827-1907), was born 4 October 1827. He joined the army as an Ensign in 19th Regiment of Foot on 2nd November 1849; rising through the ranks to become Colonel of the Regiment in 1886. He retired with the honorary rank of Lieutenant-General on 22 December 1886. In an army career spanning almost 40 years, Chippindall was present at the battles of the Alma, Inkerman and the siege of Sebastopol during the Crimean War. He was one of just five officers to serve continually throughout the campaign. He also served during the Indian Mutiny, and Commanded the 19th Regiment during the Hazara campaign of 1868. Following retirement he served as Aide de Camp to Queen Victoria (1872 to 1883) and was also made a Commander of the Bath. Chippindall's signature dates from when he was a 25 year old lieutenant and he may well have carried this book on some of his many hazardous campaigns. English short title catalogue, T182602. Held by: Alexander Turnbull Library (Wellington, New Zealand); Huntington, (San Marino, California); Bodleian Library, Lincoln College & Worcester College, Oxford University.. Hardcover. Good.

About Camden Lock Books, ABA, IOBA.

My online bookselling is Camden Lock books. I own Camden Lock Books & list books that are uncommon, in demand and may be hard to find.

My book expertise came with four years as Chairman of London P.B.F.A. , many more years of exhibiting at monthly London Rare Book Fairs & owning my own bookshops continuously since 1984.

Every book here was valued by the person who first bought it and will be just as prized by the person who buys it now from my shopping website.

I am an accredited professional & a full member of the ABA, ILAB and the IOBA, "Setting the standard. The books you want...from booksellers you can trust".

You can meet me on my stand at Firsts 2024, London's Rare Book Fair, at the Saatchi Gallery, London SW3 4RY, 16-19 May 2024.
I also am joint owner of Burley Fisher Books , an independent bookshop offering new and secondhand books.
