Signed by Laws.John Keeble in his A Tribute to B G Laws we learn Laws was born on February 6, 1861 in Barnsbury, London and died on September 21, 1931 in London, also composed problems under the noms de plume, Handley Roads (while living on Hanley Road); S. Green (while living at Stroud Green); N.R.S (the final initials of his three names. Benjamin Glover Laws); C. Hill (Crouch Hill); I. S. Lington (Islington); C. Horn (Hornsey). Keeble wrote that, "Mr. Laws started his problematic career in a column edited by F. C. Collins in Brief. . . The names of the patronesses are printed: Mrs. Hartman Kuhn, Mrs. Harry McCall, Mrs. Charles Macalater, Jr., Mrs. Francis Peters, Mrs. George Blight, and Mrs. Edward Merrell. With this is a light pink sheet (16 x 12 cm.), folded and printed with the dates (Mon. Jan. 15, Tues. Jan. 30, and Thurs. Feb. 8) and times. The music began at 9:00, the German Cotillion was at 12:00, and the balls ended at 3:00. The Dancing Assembly of Philadelphia, also known as "The Assemblies," was established in the winter of 1748-49. Remaining an annual tradition into the 21st century, the Assembly Ball is the oldest continuously operating subscription dance in the United States. Laid inside front cover is a letter handwritten dated December 4, 1964 and signed by the author and and addressed to Mrs. Briggs, it also references Ambassador Ellis Briggs, so it has quite an interesting provenance. Briggs was a career diplomat, Ambassador to seven countries in 37 years of service and received the Medal of Freedom from President Eisenhower. This 48 page pamphlet has an illustrated cover with light soil. Some pages tips are turned at the bottom; pencilled price on title page. Bottom corner and title page previously folded.
