About This Item

Stockholm: Ahlen & Akerlunds Forlag, 1914. First Edition. softcover. very Good/very good. Large softcover folio in matte, illustrated wrappers, lithographed in gilt and color, showing an expressive boy in work or war boots, gripping the Swedish flag. B/w photographs throughout, primarily of the march and demonstrations in Stockholm. Within, two full color chromolithographed and heavily gilt folio pages laid in, suitable for framing. This compelling keepsake marks the occasion of the ‚Bondetaget, February 6, 1914, where 30,000 farmers marched to and rallied in Stockholm. It was there King Gustav V proclaimed the need for continued warship production and expanded defense spending. The Kings speech (Baileys Speech) created a constitutional crisis, a conflict between monarchy and ministry, which led to the ousting of the liberal Prime Minister Karl Staaff, whose defense reductions threatened the secure conservatism of the folk and farm population. A counter-demonstration of 50,000 followed two days later.
