About This Item

London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd., 1956. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The interior of the book is crisp and clean. There is a gift inscription to a former owner (A Merry Christmas, 1957) on the front free end paper, but no other marks or wear. The blue cloth covers are fresh, with just a touch of wear at tips and corners. The dust jacket is price-clipped, but is otherwise in excellent condition, with very minor wear at the top and bottom of the spine. A very nice copy. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover. Synopsis: Young Tommy Glover was given evidence of the terrible things that could happen at sea, when the sailor Billy Batt turned up 'out of the blue' at Mrs. Glover's shop and told a gruesome tale about how Captain Glover, Tommy's father, had been murdered at sea two years before by Black Benito, 'the blackest, boldest, baddest pirate since Captain Harry Morgan.' Yet there was something suspicious about the tale that did not seem to Tommy to ring quite true. But Tommy and his mother soon had other things to think about when they joined a party of emigrants sailing from Liverpool to Boston, U.S.A., and then Tommy's adventures really began! Not only were the accommodation and conditions aboard shocking, but, like so many passenger vessels operated by unscrupulous owners at that time, this ship was actually unseaworthy. It was hardly surprising therefore when they found themselves wrecked upon the rocky coast of Nova Scotia.
