This is Johnson's account of his leadership at the National Recovery Administration . His time there was tumultuous . He was constantly at odds with Perkins , Hopkins , Ickes , Morgenthau and other members of the Roosevelt team . After much consternation , Roosevelt finally had to let him go . This book was published a few months after his resignation . It was the first insider account of the New Deal to be published . A few months later Harry Hopkins published his account in SPENDING TO SAVE and Donald Richberg told his story in THE RAINBOW . The three books together provide a remarkable , contemporary analysis of the New Deal . This is a very good copy of Johnson's book and is SIGNED by him on the first free endpaper . The hinges are tight . The interior is clean , no marks of any kind except for the Johnson's inscription . The cloth on the boards is still a bright red and the gold graphics are bright on the spine . The dust jacket shows wear , has large chips on the edges Fading to the jacket on the spine panel and the front flap is price clipped . The dust jacket is now protected with a mylar cover .
