A story of the convict settlement at Botany Bay David Blackburn, a quiet unassuming man of Norfolk descent, was Master of H.M.S. Armed Tender Supply when it joined the fleet to sail from Portsmouth to Botany Bay in 1787. Transportation abroad as punishment for various crimes was Government policy at the time and this book based on David Blackburn's recently discovered letters home describe vividly the comparative ease of the long journey and the first convict settlement in Botany Bay. Ships later continued on to survey Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands and Blackburn was honoured that a small isle off the latter received his name, although this fell into disuse and was only restored through the efforts of the author, whose interest in Blackburn's letters was aroused merely in the course of casual conversation. Dustjacket painting by Roger Finch .
