About This Item

William Morrow & Co, 1972-11-01. Hardcover. Good. 9x6x1. Good in good dust jacket. clean text, tight binding, light wear to exterior, Support Pacific Northwest Independent Booksellers! signed by Dr. Consuelo Shaw on FFEP 305 p. illus. 24 cm. Includes Illustrations. This book is from Consuelo Shaw's personal library. We have more of her books available upon request. A portion of the proceeds generated by the sale of this book go straight to Shaw's surviving family members. The daughter of Dora Shaw and civic leader David Shaw, who founded Seattle's first black Boy Scout troop and organized the Central Area Brokers' Association, Shaw was a strong-willed woman who made others better, family said. When Shaw's first pupil--younger sister Carmelita Shaw-Arns--memorized stories in her primary books instead of understanding grammatical concepts, Shaw mixed up the pages and insisted her sister reach benchmarks. Roscoe Bass, another longtime Seattle School District employee, said he would often substitute at Eckstein and spend hours preparing material for teachers who didn't have a backup plan. But he never needed those when filling in for Shaw's science class. "She was very professional in all respects, " he said. Shaw graduated from Garfield High in 1946, and last year was elected into the school's hall of fame. She also received a bachelor's of science and master's in counseling from Seattle University, which named her one of the school's 100 outstanding alumni in 1991. Her jobs included dean of students at Chief Sealth High, vice principal at Rainier Beach High and both vice principal and principal at Ballard High. In August 1973, she became the first woman to serve on the Seattle superintendent's executive committee. Shaw also was the first woman initiated into the Ballard Kiwanis.
