About This Item
Synopsis
Joyce Carol Oates uses the 1969 Chappaquidick scandal that colored Ted Kennedy's career as a basis for this novel, retelling it from the young woman's point of view. Kelly Kelleher has just met "The Senator" at a Fourth of July party, and the vulnerable young woman goes driving with him after they have had a couple of drinks. As we hope that the inevitable tragedy rewrites itself in this recreation, we know that the black waters will indeed rise by the end of this gripping short novel.
