George (Black) Robinson is renowned for his claims to have Christianised and civilised the Tasmanian aborigines in the 1830's. Official recognition came when he was appointed first Chief Protector of Aborigines in Australia. Challenging that image this study reveals a greedy, vain, and unscrupulous man, bent on self aggrandisement. Yet he was an intrepid and perceptive traveller. Covering thousands of kilometers on foot and horseback, he was the first European visitor in many remote ares of Tasmania, and he followed hard on the trail of mainland explorers.
