About This Item

New York:: Viking,, (2002). SIGNED hardcover first edition -. Fine in fine dust jacket.. First printing. The story of William Sheppard, a 24-year-old African-American and Southern Presbyterian missionary who n 1890 left New York for the Congo. During the next 20 years, he explored that country, discovering a lake that now bears his name; made contact with the Kuba kingdom (he was made a Kuba prince), although he failed in his attempt to create a "utopia of African-American achievement in Africa." He exposed the brutal, genocidal treatment of Africans by the Belgian colonial authorities, which resulted in his being tried for slander, and more. Publisher's Weekly notes that this book "captures the undercurrent of horror found everywhere in the late 19th-century Congo while honoring Sheppard's accomplishments, heroism and character." SIGNED by the author on the title page and dated in the year of publication. Illustrated with many never before published photographs, notes, bibliography, index. xviii, 237 pp. Map endpapers.
