A shocking book" about the white author's quest to experience life as a Black man in the deep South, which he undertook by having his skin temporarily darkened medically & shaving his head so that he presented as "bald, middle-aged Negro." He then spent a month walking, hitchhiking, & riding buses around the Deep South of the early 1960s, crossing the line "into the country of the American Negro--a country of hate, fear, & hopelessness." Orig. appearing in excerpts in Sepia magazine & in hardcover in 1960, this is the First Mass Market Paperback Edition (Signet P2709) from 1961, but a later (31st) printing. In 157 pages + 2 pages of ads for other titles in rear, photos on back cover Condition is VG: completely clean & unmarked inside, noticeable rightward lean & spine roll, minor edgewear & rubbing all around. Synopsis

John Howard Griffin (1920-1980) is known internationally as the author of two novels, Nuni and The Devil Rides Outside , five books and monographs on racism in addition to Black Like Me , a biography of Thomas Merton , three collections of photography, a volume of journals, two historical works on Texas, a musicological study, and The John Howard Reader . Born in Dallas, Texas, and educated in France, he served in the U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific, where an injury he received during a Japanese bombardment eventually resulted in the complete loss of his sight. In the 1950's he converted to Catholicism, married, and raised a family. In 1957, (after ten years of blindness) he miraculously regained his sight.
