Binding is tight. Small half-inch black scribble in upper right corner of front end sheet (where presumably a small handwritten price may have been). Inscribed and signed by author on limitations page to a personal friend of the author, of which this is copy #235 of only 1050 numbered copies. Pages are lightly toned, otherwise clean and pristine. Multiple items laid-in. A personal letter dated 1938 on Bishop's letterhead to his personal friend and in original stamped enveloped with Bishop's return address. An original signed etching. Plus two 20" x 30" unsigned sketches of swans on folded tissue paper, one in which he notes the colors of yellow and black in the beak and face (the tissues have small tears). A 2-page article written by Bishop published in Filmo Topics, Spring 1940.; 333 pages .

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period.
