Bright, clean, unblemished, pale blue paper-covered boards with bright, crisp, stamped white letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,slim 8vo HB+dw.dj,1st edn,9th imp,vi-ixpp+3-197pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,88 poems; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages and dedication. Ted Hughes's 'Birthday Letters' are addressed, with just two exceptions, to Sylvia Plath, the American poet to whom he was married. They were written over a period of more than twenty-five years, the first a few years after her suicide in 1963,and represent Ted Hughes's only account of his relationship with Plath and of the psychological drama that led both to the writing of her greatest poems and her death. The book became an instant bestseller on its publication in 1998 and won the Forward Prize for Poetry in the same year.Reprinted many times, but now out-of -print. Regarded by most critics to be Hughes's best work, representing a surprising resurrection for Hughes, here breaking his thirty-five year-long silence, regarding his relationship with Plath.Hughes died shortly after the publication of this work,in the same year that he was appointed to the Order of Merit.Ironic and poignant, that both author's last works, should be held in such high regard and become so desirable and collectable. Synopsis

Birthday Letters, published in 1998, is a collection of poetry by English poet and children's writer Ted Hughes. Released only months before Hughes's death, the collection won multiple prestigious literary awards. This collection of eighty-eight poems is widely considered to be Hughes's most explicit response to the suicide of his estranged wife Sylvia Plath in 1963, and to their widely discussed, politicized and "explosive" marriage.
