Boston: Houghton and Mifflin, 1888-1896. 510th Thousand. Hardcover. Very good/poor. Katharine R. Wireman. A very good "510th Thousand" ca. 1896 edition in a poor, but original dustjacket. Difficult to find an early edition with an intact dust jacket. Both the dust jacket and copyright page denote the number of copies of the book of the book. Red cloth pictorial boards, showing a girl with crutches on the cover. The image is repeated on the dust jacket. Moderate soiling to top and bottom edge of book. head and tail of spine worn. Previous owners gift inscription on first free endpaper, dated 1911. Toning and offsetting from dust jacket on paste downs. List of works on last page ends with Wiggin's "Nine Love Songs and a Carol, " which was published in 1896. Dust jacket is tattered and missing pieces. Dust jacket now protected in a clear, removable, archival cover. [xii], 69 pp. Duodecimo, 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches tall. Kate Douglas Wiggin (September 28, 1856 – August 24, 1923) was an American educator and author of children's stories, most notably the classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the Silver Street Free Kindergarten). With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers.
