Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1942. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt lettering, price-clipped dust jacket. 431pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Near fine/very good. Jacket mildly edgeworn, with small edge chip. First edition, tight and nice -- and with choice autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from James, 1p, 6" X 9", Pleasantville, NY, 21 November 1939. Addressed to notable Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On imprinted letterhead, James send this admirer "Thanks for your pleasant letter. It is things like that that keep writers writing." Boldly signed in full at the close. James (1891-1955) was a popular author and journalist awarded Pulitzer Prizes for his biographies of Andrew Jackson and Sam Houston.
