About This Item
London: Methuen, 1924. 8vo, pp. 296. 8 pp. advertisements bound in at rear. Original red boards, lettered in black to front panel and spine. Lacking the dustwrapper. Small inked number to top corner of ffep., minimal wear to spine ends and slight bumping to corners, otherwise a near fine copy. First edition. Serialised in the Saturday Evening Post earlier the same year. 'I am half-way through mapping out a new novel, which looks like being a pippin. I am going on a new system this time, making the scenario very full, putting in atmosphere and dialogue etc., so that when I come actually to write it the work will be easy. So far I have scenarioed it out to about the 40,000 word mark; and it has taken me 13,000 words to do it! I have now reached a point where deep thought is required. I am not sure I haven't got too much plot, and may have to jettison the best idea in the story. I suppose the secret of writing is to got through your stuff till you come on something you think is particularly good, and then cut it out.' (PGW to Bill Townend, 4 November 1923) Scarce -- especially in such nice condition.
