About This Item

Philadelphia: J. Hamilton, 1850. First American edition. Very good.. First American edition of this true miniature book of engraved views of various holy sites. A charming example of the mid-19th-century fashion for publishing miniature travel books. Bondy notes that this Philadelphia edition was issued in the same year as the London-based Rock & Co. published their edition of the same title. Quite scarce today. 1.25'' x 1''. Original blue cloth wrapper with gilt titles to front. All edges gilt. 31 black-and-white engraved illustrations with pictorial title page. [32] leaves, printed one side only. Wrapper with some edgewear and light rubbing, with slight loss to upper edge. Corners a bit rounded with occasional light soil to leaves, else sound.
