About This Item

Edinburgh, Scotland and London: Mainstream Publishing Co.. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket. 1992. First Edition. Hard Cover. 1851584757 Inscribed & Signed By Author / Association Copy INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR CHRIS WAY ON TITLE PAGE TO CHARLTON HESTON. The late actor Charlton Heston (also a veteran of the Army Air Force in WWII) was US Chairman of the American Air Museum, and this was his copy, inscribed thus: "To Charlton Heston, My Very Warmest Regards, Keep up the good work on The American Air Museum, Chris Way 24/6/93. St. James Palace." The American Air Museum in Britain, based at IWM Duxford, stands as a memorial to the 30,000 Americans who died flying from the UK in the Second World War. Charlton Heston was US Chairman of the American Air Museum beginning in 1991 and attended the Official opening ceremony in 1997. The lives of the American flyers in Britain and the Big Bands that performed there during the war are historically entwined. Chris Way's book THE BIG BANDS GO TO WAR presents the full story of the Allied Services bands of World War Two. Extensively illustrated and with comprehensive listings of all the major broadcasts, recording sessions and transcripts, it details the inside stories of such bands as those of Glenn Miller, Sam Donahue, Artie Shaw and the RAF Squadronaires. Also included are contributions from many famous bandleaders, musicians, singers, BBC producers and archivists both in Britain and the USA. 288 pages, index, photo illustrations throughout. Introduction by Robert Farnon, with a preface by Jimmy Miller. .
