About This Item

Holland Press, London, 1964 reprint of 1931 first edition. Cloth, 8vo,. xiii, 355 pp. From the blurb: "This work of scholarship, first published in 1931 is the only comprehensive bibliography of French novels that exists. Particularly valuable are the collations, attributions of authorship in the case of anonymous works, and locations of copies in libraries." From the preface: "The aim of this work is to give a complete list of French novels published in the seventeenth century.. The author has endeavored definitely to exclude from the work all manifest translations, all true travel accounts (many of which will be found in the appendix), all works of history which are not fiction .. All contes, all nouvelles which are too short to be classed as romans - (it will be noted that nouvelles of sufficient length to be classed as romans are included) - all memoires, except a few which bear the stamp of fiction rather than fact, such as the memoires of Courtilz de Sandras, which border too closely on the domain of the novel to be rightfully excluded.. A definite effort has been made to give the first edition of each work and also the cali number of every volume listed in at least one of the three libraries richest in this material, in order to make this work useful to investigatore in the novel of the seventeenth century. ..The main body of the work is divided into three parts. Part I is an alphabetical list of authors. No anonymous works appear in this section. Part II is a chronological list of all novels published during the seventeenth Century, whether anonymously or under the name of the author. Part III is an alphabetical list of titles, serving also as index by cross references to Parts I and II.". The Appendix includes ".. Certain works which border closely on the domain of the novel, such as travel accounts or stories of the lives of certain people, which are not really novels but which are sufficiently related to mention. Good in used, chipped and price-clipped dustwrapper.
