London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound in hardcover format, generally clean, lightly toned at worst, minimal rubbing to extremities. Blue cloth over boards, bumping to spine head and tail, light forward cock to spine. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn, mildly soiled, not price-clipped. Note on the type, Foreword, Acknowledgments, Abbreviations, Introduction, 705 entries, and then a full and complete index of Foulis Press output, which was founded in the city of Glasgow, Scotland in the 18th century. Among those who studied there were Robert (1707-76) and Andrew (1712-75) Foulis, the sons of Andrew Faulls, or Faulds, a barber and maltman in the town. The brothers changed their surname in the 1730s. Robert Foulis trained as a barber, and subsequently attended Francis Hutcheson’s classes at the University. It was that great professor of moral philosophy who encouraged him to become a printer and bookseller (George Fairfull Smith, for the Glasgow University Special Collections library). Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. [6], 7-420 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
