About This Item

Holland Press Ltd, London, 1963 reprint of the 1933 edition. Cloth, blue cover-title and cover device, 8vo, 25 cm,. 274 pp +108 plates. A scholarly bibliography of needlework pattern books published in the 16th and 17th centuries. Arranged by date within countries of origin: Germany, Italy, France, and England. Index of names and titles, Index of publishers, places of publication, and presses. Includes an example from each surviving book. From a contemporary review of the first edition: "There is a historical introduction which is the only complete survey of pattern-books, except for the section on this subject in Jessen's Der Ornamentstich, and to each entry is added a note describing the type of pattern represented and establishing the work in its relationship to other pattern-books. In addition to the light thrown on the early history of lace and on the interchange of embroidery designs, there is much of interest as to the localization of the printing centres and the activities of obscure draughtsmen and engravers. Herr Lotz catalogues many more editions than have hitherto been thought to exist, and establishes as the earliest of all pattern-books one printed in Augsburg by Johannes Schönsperger in 1523.
