William Pickering, London, first edition, 1834. 4 vols in 2, later library buckram, new endpapers, gilt spine-titles, 8vo,. xii, 1054 + 1055-2002, [1] pp title-pages to Vol I and Vol II at start of volumes, others not retained. The first edition of Lowndes' stupendous achievement and the only one to be published by William Pickering, this manual was issued in parts to form four "handsomely printed volumes" (Keynes), here bound in two volumes.Breslauer and Folter annotate this in their catalogue: "First edition of what is still the best general bibliography of English literature from the book collector's viewpoint. An ex-library set with gilt Dewey numbers on the spines, a label on each front pastedown endpaper and withdrawn stamp on the front free endpaper, small library stamp at foot of title-page and final textpage in each volume, accession stamp on verso of each title-page, contents otherwise Good, a soundly bound and well-preserved set.
