John Esten Cooke was an American novelist, writer and poet. During the American Civil War, Cooke served as a staff officer in the Confederate States Army cavalry.

After he started writing, he almost immediately became a successful novelist and prolific short story writer, eventually authoring 31 books and almost 200 published articles and poems Even before the end of the war, in 1863, Cooke wrote the first of several popular biographies, that of Stonewall Jackson. His later efforts at biography, such as this biography of Robert E. Lee as well as officers that he had personally known, were considered more accurate that his early Jackson biography.

"A Life of Gen. Robert E. Lee" was published just after Lee's death. It includes 25 illustrations and maps.

Dominique Busnot was an 18th-century French historian who, after traveling to Morocco numerous times, wrote what became his most famous and important work – "History of Mouley Ismael, King of Morocco". Mouley Ismael served as king for nearly fifty years and is remembered for expanding Moroccan territory through military strength and diplomacy with European powers. Busnot describes Mouley's reign as bloodthirsty, having taken French Christians as prisoner by Moroccan pirates. Having spent many years in Morocco negotiating with Moroccan leaders for the release of these prisoners, Busnot wrote this work to convince readers to help financially with the efforts to free the Christian prisoners from Morocco.

This 1731 edition of Busnot's most famous work was published in Rouen by Pierre Machuse and includes Busnot position on the church's tradition of pardoning slaves.

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
