The Macmillan Company, New York . London, 1958. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good/Poor. Illustrator: Giovannetti. A Word of Explanation by John Meredith. The text is illustrated with 39 a full-page black-and-white illustrations, in various styles, of dogs and four pages of dog cartoons, where there are two illustrations per page. All drawings done by Giovannetti. 1/4 black coloured cloth backstrip with gilt coloured titles. 3/4 illustrated front cover, again by Giovannetti ( who also happened to do the illustration on the rear book panel ), with black and yellow coloured titles. Illustrated dustwrapper, same illustration as for underlying board, with black and yellow coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the backstrip. "Wildly improbable but wonderfully real are these forty odd caricatures in which Giovannetti captures the Quintessence of Dog. With wit and with sharp observation Giovannetti conveys the quirks and crochets of man's best friend. Accompanying each drawing are multiple captions in French and in English devised by several hands in dogged disagreement.". -- from the front fold over panel. Softening and rubbing to the back strip edges with bumping of the book corners. Sunning of the book panels along with some rubbing and a few foxing spots to the rear panel. Light aged honing of the text block edges with scattered foxing. Offset tanning to the endpapers and the front endpaper has previous owner's name to the top edge of the free front endpaper, and original bookseller's sticker to the lower right hand corner of the front paste-down. Words almost fail on had bad the dustwrapper condition is – please see photograph. Chipping, with quite considerable loss, to the dustwrapper corners and lower back strip edge. The top in and a half of the back strip is missing and similar size pieces missing top right hand corner of the rear panel. A piece is missing from the lower edge of the front panel and a tear of 1.25 "extends from this piece missing. There is a 6.25 " arcing tear to the lower left hand corner of the front panel going into the body of the front panel. Heavy rubbing, marks and various other nasty is to the dustwrapper. Browning and foxing to the verso. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall. non-paginated and at the rear of the book 3 pages not illustrated (intentionally),. Text is in English / French. Dust Jacket price-clipped.
