About This Item

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1876. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fair. First British edition. Textblock detached; backstrip absent. [Separation occurs between the half-title and title pages, and after two pages of the advertising.] Sewn binding with thin papered boards; covers are decoratively illustrated (red, green and black on very pale blue). The front cover denotes ''The Rose Library'' and ''price one shilling'' and the rear cover features a lovely advert for Fry's Caracas Cocao. Interior is unmarked. 12mo. pp. [4], (5)-159, [1], plus [4] publisher's advertising. Placed in a mylar sleeve. A search of OCLC turned up two copies (Bodleian Library and Cambridge University) of the Sampson Low edition. A rare copy of the first British edition [ref: BAL 19484] that preceded the Scottish Termperance Society edition by many months. The Sampson Low edition is noted to have been deposited at the British Museum on Apr 24, 1876 and was listed in Publishers' Circular (London) on May 1, 1876 where it is identified as a volume in the Rose Library series. The earliest mention of the Scottish Temperance Society edition is in an advertisement in the Christmas issue of Bookseller (London), 1876.
