About This Item

Berlin: Julius Springer, 1933. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF A 1933 PAPER BY EUGENE WIGNER DESCRIBING THE SCATTERING OF PROTONS & NEUTRONS; THE PÖSCHL-TELLER POTENTIAL; & GUIDO BECK ON DIRAC'S HOLES THEORY. Full volume.

Eugene Paul Wigner (1902-1995) was a Hungarian-American physicist, mathematician and engineer "who made a number of important proposals for how symmetries can be applied to the analysis of quantum mechanics" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). In 1963 he received half the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his contributions to the theory of the atomic nucleus and the elementary particles, particularly through the discovery and application of fundamental symmetry principles" (Nobel Prize Committee).

In quantum mechanics, the scattering of particles is the principal tool by which the microscopic world can be investigated. In this paper, Wigner argues that "The scattering of neutrons on protons is calculated on the assumption that their interaction can be described by a potential that extends to only very small distances. This potential is related to the mass defect of Urey's hydrogen" (Wigner 1933).

We also separately offer the Wigner paper in original paper wraps.

ALSO INCLUDED: Pöschl & Teller's "Bemerkungen zur Quantenmechanik des anharmonischen Oszillators" pp. 143-151. In mathematical physics, the Pösch-Teller potential, originating in this paper, is "a special class of potentials for which the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation can be solved in terms of Special functions" (Wikipedia). The paper "investigates to what extent one can conclude on the potential course with an anharmonic oscillator according to the classical theory and after the quantum mechanics from the spectrum. Potential examples are given as examples for which the Schrödinger equation can be exactly integrated. With families of substantially different potential curves obtained from one approach, the energy levels and thus also the frequencies occurring in the spectrum are the same" (Pöschl & Teller, 143).

ALSO INCLUDED: Beck, G. [Guido] "Hat das negative Energiespektrum einen Einfluß auf Kernphänomene?" pp. 498-511. Beck discusses the question of how far Dirac's "holes" theory seems suitable - first qualitatively - to account for a number of core phenomena. CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Julius Springer. Full volume. Ex-libris bearing two small stamps on the rear of the title page. Provenance: Bears the ownership stamp on the blank front flyleaf of Friedrich Hund, a German physicist known for his work on atoms and molecules. (9 x 6.5 inches; 225 x 163mm). [viii], 845pp, [3]. Bound in black cloth over marbled paper boards; very slight rubbing at the edge tips. Tightly and very solidly bound. Bright and clean inside and out. Near fine.
