RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS. Here "Einstein used the thermodynamic approach to fluctuations in Brownian motion to predict voltage fluctuations in condensers. To test his theory, he needed a new, highly sensitive instrument - more sensitive than the available electrometers, which could measure to a few thousandths of a volt. Einstein designed it, had it built, and famously called it his Maschinchen (Little Machine)" (Calaprice, 14). This paper is Einstein's description of his Little Machine. The machine is held with great affection in the physics community as an example of the experimental, practical side of the man who was the ultimate theorist. Three known versions of this machine are known to exist, at least one of which was used in an experiment conducted by Walter Gerlach. Weil 16. CONDITION & DETAILS: Leipzig: Barth. 1907. 4to. Berlin: Julius Springer. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST MATHEMATICALLY CORRECT FORMULATION OF THE HEISENBERG UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE. In quantum mechanics, "the uncertainty principle is any of a variety of mathematical inequalities asserting a fundamental limit to the precision with which certain pairs of physical properties of a particle, such as position x and momentum p, can be known simultaneously. The more precisely the position of some particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be known and vice versa. In "Zur quantenmechanik einfacher bewegungstypen," or "Quantum mechanics of simple types of motion, Earle Kennard correctly derived the formula for uncertainty of position and momentum only a few months after Heisenberg stated his principle. While on a sabbatical from Cornell and at the University of Gottingen in 1926, Kennard had learned the new quantum mechanics directly from Heisenberg and Jordan. With that knowledge and his deep understanding of Heisenberg's work,…
