About This Item
Anchorage, Alaska:: Great Northwest Publishing, 1986.. 1st Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: dark blue cloth with gilt text; a Very Good book, with a Good dust jacket.. 8vo (8.75 inches tall) . Appendix. Description: This has two forewords: one by Marcus F Jensen (Alaska Master Guide No. 20), and one by Judge Robert Boochever (North U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals). Includes two sections of black and white photo plates, and found at the rear are several sketches and a list of bear trophy locations -- a sort of bear-hunting atlas of Alaska. The publisher's blurb tells us: ''During his half century of Alaska hunting, Judge George W Folta bagged some 200 bears. Judge Folta grew up in an era when young boys were taught to emulate Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett, and developed into manhood after the example of Theodore Roosevelt. Coming to Alaska in 1912, young Folta wasted no time beginning his lifelong pursuit of bear, venturing 0nto Kodiak Island the very next spring. Indeed, the future judge returned to Kodiak the next year as well, and packed deep into the heart of that island where he shot three tremendously large Brown Bears with a little model 1908 .35 Remington autoloader. He died while bear hunting in 1955. But Folta was far more than just a hunter: he was one of the most respected Alaska jurists of his ay. Without any formal law school education young Folta began his legal career working as a territorial court clerk. He later passed the bar, and was eventually appointed by FDR to serve as the territorial U.S. District Court Judge at Juneau in 1947. This volume was written by his son.''
