Crawfordsville, IN: The Ben Hur Life Association, n.y.. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Black pebble-grained cloth with gilt lettering and medallion. 44pp. 8 line drawings. Near fine. A superbly tight and bright copy of this Masonic title. The Supreme Tribe of Ben-Hur was a fraternal organization founded in 1893 in Indiana and based on the character in Union general Lew Wallace's blockbuster 1880 novel "Ben Hur"; this mutual benefit society provided life insurance for its members, which consisted of both men and women. Interestingly, this particular copy belonged to George David Manson (1926-2006), long-time employee of the Chicago printer R.R. Donnelley and Sons. He is descended from Major General Mahlon Dickerson Manson (1820-95), whose military and post-war career intertwined in many ways with his friend Wallace -- Manson defeated Wallace to win his one term as Democratic member of Congress (1871-73). This was George Manson's corrected copy for a new edition (presumably printed by Donnelley), bearing on front pastedown his boldly pencilled "Copy for Job #60246 / G.D. Manson / 11/8/45 / Correct pages 2 & 44 / as shown" and bears other pencilled measurements by Manson here and there throughout.
