L. Vervliet. Lyon, Sebastian Gryphius, 1547. Famous poetic description of the Second Punic War; it is the longest of all Roman epics. Silius Italicus (c. 25 - c. 100 A.D.), Roman politician, poet and a consul under Nero, was greatly indebted to the syntactial and formal perfection of Vergil. This is a reprint of the Aldus edition of 1524, with the dedication by Francesco Asolano, and a life of Silius by Pietro Crinito (1465-1504). - Title somewhat spotted with ms. name, number and library stamp, name stamp on flyleaves, old ms. ink annotations in French of front flyleaf, a few annotations in the text. - STC (French) 401; Adams S-1136; Ebert II, 21226.
