About This Item

Paris: Librairie Armand Colin, 1968. First French edition. (Note: English edition same year). Printed card wraps. Royal 8vo (24cm). pp. 501. Bibliography, Index, Table. Very Good. Cover and page edges toned, no spine crease, tiny ink owner and two short yellow strips on half-title. "His great book, Les Belles infideles and the formation of classical taste: Perrot d'Ablancourt and Guez de Balzac, an essay from his thesis prepared under the direction of Rene Pintard, is in no way a profession of libertinism, as the title might suggest. suggest, but a pioneering book published by Armand Colin in 1968. Centered on the figure of Nicolas Perrot d'Ablancourt, Protestant writer in the service of the King of France and Richelieu, who was one of the first members of the French Academy , at a time when all seemed forgiven to the Reformed Protestants under the monarchy, he inventories the abundant work of a translator or rather adapter, in turn of Tacitus, Arrian, Xenophon, Caesar, Lucian and finally Thucydides. His translation of Lucien, comments Roger Zuber, did not prevent Perrot d'Ablancourt from attacking the sly "Lucianists", the hypocritical defenders of the bad master, the very people who gravitated around Conde, who shared his vices and his impiety". Frank Lestringant (STUDI FRANCESI)..
