About This Item

London: The Harvill Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 1999. First Edition. Hardcover. 1860466745 . Unpaginated, with duo tone photographs, a fine copy. Postage will be reduced for this book. The Beken archive is a marine photographic collection without equal. It is the compilation of a dynasty of marine photographers whose early images (on glass plates) date back to the 1880s. This album, modelled on the samples that representatives of the firm of Beken of Cowes used to carry is a tribute to the work of Frank and Keith Beken, the first and second generations of this family of professional marine photographers, between 1890 and 1950. The shelves in Cowes contain more than 75,000 glass plates and many more thousands of negatives. These pictures, chosen by Keith Beken, show decade by decade the fascinating changes and developments in the yachting world and place the boats in the context of the yachting epoch in which they sailed. They illustrate the beauty of the yachts and embody the spirit of a past age. ; 160 x 215mm .
