About This Item

New York: D. Appleton-Century Company, Inc., 1942 WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Black cloth, gilt titles on spine, endpaper maps, xi, 427 pp, footnotes, index. Black felt-tip mark resembling a remainder mark on bottom edge, but probably more recent. Cloth has spots where sizing has been lost, otherwise VG, paper browning and a few small spots on edges. DJ has large tears (to about 8 cm) with creasing on front panel, smaller chips and tears, corners of flaps trimmed; in Brodart archival cover. Hall spent many years in China in government posts, during which time Japan invaded Manchuria. Some of his dispatches to the China Weekly Review were sent with the note "Up Close" to indicate, vaguely, his whereabouts, but this was quickly modified to become a pseudonym. After returning to the United States, he wrote the first edition of this book, which was published under the title "Challenge: Behind the Face of Japan" in 1935. In it, he predicted that Japan would attack Pearl Harbor. He was much in demand as a radio commentator and lecturer after Dec. 7, 1941, but later in the war lost his job with NBC for slanting the news to align with his own opinions. Shipping weight 3 lbs.. 2nd ed. . G/G. 22 X 15 cm.

SHIPPING IN UNITED STATES: Books are priced postpaid, so there are no additional shipping charges for standard shipping. We will ship via Priority Mail for $12.00 per order (Save on multiple-book orders!). This may be reduced if actual postage is less than for a medium flat-rate box.
